Based on archaeological excavations, geomorphological analysis of geoarchives, palynology, geophysical prospection, as well as material analyses and dating, the changing environments and human life during several periods of occupation in what is now the desert of Peru have been reconstructed. This talk focuses on aspects of human-environment interaction and the large-scale climatic mechanisms responsible for these changes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;Earth resistivity tomography and electromagnetic induction are valuable tools for studying archaeological sites and their surroundings. Archaeological research is more effective when preceded by geophysical prospection, and sometimes new and unexpected structures are discovered. This talk presents several case studies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The traditional groundwater harvesting systems of the Turfan oases (Xinjiang, NW China) are of great archaeological interest, as the age and origin of these &#8220;qanat&#8221; systems remain unknown. Prior to our project, no numerical dating had been conducted there (or elsewhere) using natural science methods.
